And after closing, it became the backdrop of some famous films and TV shows. The prison is a popular tour location, but some visitors say the prison is still haunted by its past. The Old Joliet Haunted Prison is known as the only haunted house in the Chicago area to be inside an abandoned prison, providing a unique atmosphere for one of the region's most renowned haunted destinations. Now the innovators of national haunted attractions, 13th Floor Entertainment Group, will once again transform the old prison into one of the most exciting (and terrifying) Halloween attractions in the state.

One can stroll past 18th-century Northern Italian armchairs dressed in olive velvet, beefy antique Minton jardinieres, a welded-steel Julian Mayor chair that resembles a spiderweb, and arresting art and photography by the likes of William Klein and Marco Breuer.

In the kitchen, Netto installed a wall of blue-and-white tiles designed by Gio Ponti for his Parco Dei Principi Hotel in Rome in the 1960s, and for the living room, a pair of Jean-Michel Frank chairs originally created for the Llao Llao Hotel in Patagonia in the 1930s. Netto’s prolific portfolio is a testament to his talent for forging intriguing, nuanced dialogues between past and present; between the architectural envelope and the selection of furnishings; between sophistication and livability. “I wanted the effect of a family collection in a palazzo,” Netto says. “That’s the mission of the room.” To amplify that script, he had hoped to install a terrazzo floor, but structural concerns led to him to pave the space with wide English oak planks instead, as bare as the day they were milled. When designer David Netto couldn’t find rustic and sculptural lamps to suit his clients' spaces, he set out to create his own.

Like many of the most beautiful locations in the world, the Bahamas can be a difficult place to pull off a decorating job. This project—one of the prettiest houses on one of the loveliest sites in one of the nicest spots in the Caribbean, the Lyford Cay Club—is a case in point. During more than two years of construction we had obstacles involving shipping, weather, communications, and travel logistics. Everyone on the design team fell in love with this place, as did the owners, who dubbed their new home Hideout. But then came the pandemic, and once the family was holed up there for months on end, they realized it was time to transform the house into a “real home,” the policy analyst recalls. I wanted to make this the first fancy house here that looks like it actually belongs to young people. The most direct line of attack seemed to be to remake the ubiquitous tile floors—the thing that’s visible everywhere in a tropical house—in some mischievous, unexpected material. If one decision counted here, it was the first one—to save the existing building, adding on to it strategically rather than tearing it down. This elegant but compact villa had a position in the hearts of the community. Its previous owners were well-liked, and many neighbors shared happy recollections of dinner parties there. But it was a one-story house made for a couple, not a family with four kids.
They also asked him to figure out a way to bring in more sun and a sense of expansiveness. Netto stressed that making a great interior and acquiring historical masterpieces does not necessarily cost more. For Netto, this a lifelong vocation; he lamented that life is too short while there is so much to discover. Greatness also takes a daring spirit, with the vision to curate, layer, and juxtapose beyond the familiar conventions. As usual, our go-to hack is to use packing cubes to make the most out of every inch of space available. They stay up like the sturdy walls of a suitcase, and even the back panel is quite rigid on its own. Mind you, all of this structuredness is achieved without compromising carrying comfort. The main compartment is guarded by Zoom zippers that are quite beefy and feature Hypalon pulls on O-rings.

Also, when the MagLatch is attached in the top position, the fabric on the top of the bag can stick out on the sides and potentially allow rain, snow, or sneaky pickpockets inside. The weather-resistance of the Everyday Backpack’s material is great, but it doesn’t do too well if it’s left open.

We’ve been testing the Everyday Backpack 30L (V2) for the last three weeks in Detroit, Michigan, both as a camera bag and an everyday carry backpack. The inscription of this nomination marks the first modern architectural cultural property designation not only in California, but the United States. Well, there are four of them (yeah, four) around main access of the pack. With the four zippers, you can keep one the top and one the bottom on each side. That way, you’ll have easy access to both sides, the top, and the bottom of the main compartment. Two lash straps deploy from a magnetic pocket at the bottom of the Everyday Backpack 30L (V2).

Lower it for a 15″ laptop, for example, or adjust it up so a 13″ laptop sits higher in the pocket. If we have any nitpicks with this laptop sleeve, it’s that it can feel a bit deep for smaller laptops. We’ve seen Peak Design use adjustable ones on other bags like the Everyday Backpack Zip 20L (V2) and Everyday Backpack 30L (V2), so we would have liked to see the same here. We also noticed that the loop and hook fasteners on the tablet and laptop sleeve feel a bit small and somewhat easy to miss.

The Everyday Backpack 30L (V2) comes with three of Peak Design’s signature FlexFold dividers. These origami dividers can be put in all kinds of positions so you can fit your lenses, camera bodies, and any other accessories exactly how you want them. If you’re an organization nerd, you’re going to love these things. They’re great for travel—specifically travel with a camera kit—but they work for your everyday carry needs as well. Inside the bottom zippered pockets, you’ll find two small divider pockets which are a good size for SD cards, dongles, or other smaller bits. This is also where Peak Design stashes the other two lash straps that come with the bag.

There’s actually quite a lot of options in terms of secondary means of carrying the Travel Backpack. First, there are handles at the top, bottom, and sides of the backpack. All of them are well-padded, and the ones at the sides even get the same texture that blends well with the body. One small nitpick we have with the top handle is that since it sits below the top edge, it’s hard to use for hanging the bag on something like our pegboard.
We’ve found the Maglatch is best used on the lowest bar—so if you truly have a full 30 liters worth of stuff, you might want to consider a slightly larger bag. Now, you should know that although Peak Design calls this Everyday Backpack the 30L version, it’s actually only 30L when the MagLatch is fully at the top. The brand’s marketing is a bit misleading in this regard—it’s kind of an unsexy way to use the bag if the MagLatch is always at the top. A bungee-like stretchy key leash also comes with the Everyday Backpack 30L (V2). We have to say, we prefer the V1’s material for this key leash—it was a robust seatbelt-like nylon webbing that felt sturdy. The V2 key leash feels a little, well, cheaper and more like an afterthought since it’s not integrated with the bag at all.
Again, these are just nitpicking from an otherwise very capable backpack. Two wide liner pockets are flanking a small narrower one towards the back of the compartment. Volume for these pockets is great since they’re made from a stretchy mesh material.

Okay, the Travel Backpack in this 30-liter version doesn’t necessarily look like it breaks the mold. In fact, with enough toying of a camera’s settings, you could probably fool someone into thinking that this is the much larger 45-liter version. If we put it side by side with its bigger sibling, the similarities are more apparent; there’s nothing major to report in terms of aesthetic changes. Coming in four colors with dual internal zippers and compression straps, this 30L backpack by Osprey is a great purchase. That said, it’s so worth giving up a bit of legroom to use the amount of packing space this bag gives you.
The bag is also super sleek, functional and stylish, which always makes me feel put together on the road. Overall, this is a great carry-on backpack for frequent travelers. Peak Design includes an adjustable and stowable sternum strap to provide additional support and stability while you’re on the move. We encountered an issue with the hooks’ tightness on the 45-liter version, where one felt noticeably grippier than the other. Fortunately, that’s not the case here, and the sternum strap remained firmly in place where we positioned it. Again, Peak Design applies the same harness system they designed for the larger 45-liter version of the Travel Backpack. The shoulder straps feature thick and dense padding—a staple characteristic of any comfortable backpack. Both straps are anchored on rivets at the top of the back panel, and this allows them to swivel easily without the awkward buckling and stress more typical straps experience. Swinging the Travel Backpack around is easy thanks to these rivets, even when fully packed with clothing and supplies needed for a wedding trip.
It’s (finally) time to get into the main compartment of the Peak Design Everyday Backpack 30L (V2). There are three ways to access the main compartment—the top flap that opens up in a top-loader style and the two side zips. This laptop sleeve can be a little tricky to adjust and the velcro tends to get stuck, but once you set it you can pretty much forget it—unless you get a new laptop. We like that the laptop is suspended in the back, protecting it from unexpected drops of the bag.

Like many houses designed by Wright, Hollyhock House proved to be better as an aesthetic work than as a livable dwelling. Water tended to flow over the central lawn and into the living room, and the flat roof terraces were conceived without an understanding of Los Angeles's rains. The cantilevered concrete also did not stand up well to the area's earthquakes.

Despite the half-decade absence, wine tastings prices have only increased by about $10, though so too has the house tour add-on; consider a self-guided daytime tour of the Hollyhock House ($7) as a cheaper alternative. Regardless of how much you end up paying, you’ll be supporting the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation’s arts programming and landscaping at the historic site.
Aline Barnsdall was also a philanthropist and in 1927 gave the house and the surrounding twelve acres atop Olive Hill (now Barnsdall Park) to the City of Los Angeles as a memorial to her father Theodore. Variously described as Mayan, Aztec, Asian, Egyptian, and as a “California Romanza” by the architect himself, the Hollyhock House was a transitional structure for Wright. The building bridges the Prairie style of the preceding decades and his textile block structures of the 1920s. Wright’s client, Aline Barnsdall, was the heir of one of the largest independent oil producers in the United States. A fiercely independent feminist who was immersed in the world of experimental theater, Aline flouted convention, first approaching Wright at the height of his personal scandals. Docents are stationed around the museum on all of our self-guided tour days, eager to take questions and engage in dialogue with visitors.

California captivated both Barnsdall and Wright, and here the architect had the opportunity to develop a new regional expression, which broke from the acclaimed Prairie style he had developed in the Midwest. He took inspiration from building precedents native to the Southwest—the Pre-Hispanic and the Pueblo.
Yet it was renovated several times, had long suffered from water intrusion, and was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. In 2007, the City and Project Restore, a public-private partnership, began planning a project to address structural needs and restoration. In 2010, the project team began four years of work to repair and prevent water damage, seismically strengthen the house, restore historic elements, and reverse past alterations. Construction was supervised by Wright’s son Lloyd Wright, and the project brought a young Rudolf Schindler to Los Angeles.
